In January 2013, the Watermen Project led a scalloped hammerhead shark tagging expedition to Islas revillagigedo. The archipelago is a unesco World Heritage Site and it’s a Mexican marine reserve and national park.

We collaborated with Dr. Mauricio Hoyos, a scientist dedicated to the behavior of sharks, and a team of free divers to tag the species and conduct the research. This particular expedition combined for the first time, research and education. 13 year old Yasmine Metaxa joined the team as part of her school’s efforts to broaden awareness and promote ocean Conservation. She was exposed to scientific discussions and presentations from the scientist team as well as witnessed first-hand actual tagging. Yasmine swam with enormous manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, whales and schools of tuna. The shark species that she encountered were the scalloped hammerheads as well as a tiger shark! Yasmine presented her report to her school and helped share that awareness with her fellow students.
